Brentwood Students Earn Top Honors at Long Island Math Fair

Brentwood students earned top honors at the Long Island Math Fair, held April 24 at Hofstra University, marking a significant increase in participation and achievement for the school.

During the morning middle school session, Brentwood students secured two gold medals, five bronze medals and three honorable mention recognitions. In the afternoon high school session, which included 57 Freshman Center students and one high school student, participants earned one gold medal, 14 silver medals, 29 bronze medals and 14 honorable mentions.

The strong showing reflects a notable rise in involvement compared to last year, when only one student from the district competed.
“This incredible showing at the Long Island Math Fair fills me with so much pride not only for what our students accomplished, but for the courage they showed in exploring complex ideas and sharing their thinking with others,” said Superintendent Wanda Ortiz Rivera. “To see such a powerful increase in participation from one year to the next speaks volumes about what is happening in our schools. When our students are given the opportunity to showcase what they know, they rise to the moment with pride and confidence.”
Ortiz Rivera also expressed her appreciation for the educators who made this possible. “I am so grateful to our teachers, and to Amanda Kohan, Eileen Imhoff and Maureen Carrion from our Math and Business Curriculum Office, for encouraging and inspiring our students and helping them see that math is engaging and fun,” she said. “This increase in participation is also a reflection of all that our Board of Education continues to make available to our students and their deep commitment to student success.”
The Long Island Math Fair is a research-based competition for students in grades 7–12 and is hosted by the Association of Mathematics Supervisors of Long Island. The event encourages students to explore mathematical concepts beyond the traditional classroom by conducting independent research and presenting original projects.

At the event, Brentwood students joined peers from schools across Long Island, presenting their work and engaging in academic exchange. Organizers describe the fair as an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of mathematics while developing presentation and critical thinking skills.

The results underscore both the students’ individual accomplishments and the program’s growing presence at the regional competition.
