State Teachers Union President Visits Brentwood Schools

Melinda Person, president of New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), visited the Brentwood Union Free School District on October 10 to tour several schools and observe educational programs. Person was invited by Brentwood Teachers Association President Kevin Coyne, who accompanied her along with members of his executive board.

During her visit, Person toured North Middle School and Brentwood High School, where she explored the district’s Graduation PLUS+ initiative, career and technical education (CTE) pathways, and new elementary music programs. She also met with students in the Take a Look at Teaching (TALAT) program, observed technology upgrades and PLAN pilot classrooms, and visited one of the newly renovated libraries. Person expressed particular appreciation for the district’s digital literacy classes.

Person, who began her career as a sixth-grade teacher in Boston Public Schools, has spent more than two decades advancing education policy. Prior to joining NYSUT in 2006, she worked for the New York State Assembly and the New York State Division of Budget, negotiating and advising on education and budget policy matters.

The visit highlighted Brentwood’s commitment to preparing students for success in both higher education and the workforce, aligning with the district’s Graduation PLUS+ initiative.

“We are grateful to President Person for taking the time to see firsthand how our students and educators are leading innovation in Brentwood,” said Superintendent of Schools Wanda Ortiz-Rivera.

The district also thanked President Coyne for his partnership and leadership in facilitating the visit.
